Today when I went and looked at Jill’s exhibit, I was very surprised. Everything looked very nice, but not too terribly complicated. I’m not saying that she didn’t put time and effort into it or that I could do it, but I was just shocked. I was expecting complicated, fancy artwork, but that wasn’t it at all. When I think of art, I think of it being very intricate. It made me realize that things don’t have to be difficult to be considered art. As long as you put time and effort and can explain what you did and why you did it, then it is a masterpiece. I believe this will help me with my final project. I am not going to worry about being too terribly fancy, but just making it look simple and nice at the same time. I think it will relate to her Ten Corpses Per Second, just how it was simple but it caught the eye. The crystals really added a lot. It may have been just a solid green gun and crystals, but I think more detail would have ruined it. This exhibit helped me see that art isn’t as complicated as I had once thought it to be.

I believe the most intriguing thing about art this far is possibly focal point. I find it fascinating how artists paint things to face or point to a certain spot. I like how they can make a certain subject stick out more than the rest, weather it be by using space or line. In my last project I tried to use focal points by having my lines point towards the flower pot in the back ground. Also I made things bigger in the foreground and smaller in the background. Things in the background are also less detailed. For some reason, I find it more difficult to include focal point when using oil pastels and paints. This could very well be because I have troubles making straight lines with these utensils. Paints and oil pastels are definitely my weak point. I think another reason I like focal point is because I can understand it. When I look at a piece of artwork, I can tell when and where focal point is used. The first time I really experienced this was in middle school art class. The example I saw was the building on the side of the road that disappear into the distance. Focal point is easy and fun for me to understand.

To be completely honest, space and motion in art work still kind of confusing me. I know the definition and how I should see it, but for some reason I cannot comprehend it. I know it has something to do with focal points, which would be where line comes into play. Lines direct us to the main focal point. It shows us what we should be focus on. Shape I believe works in the same way. Like tips or points of shapes pointing to the main focus point. Or perhaps the lines on the shapes may point to it. Value, I am completely clueless. Actually the rest I am clueless on as well. Space and motion is hard for me to take in and understand. When looking at art work I dont notice focal points or vanishing points. Unless it’s the picture we all drew in high school of the vanishing road or building. I will need to read the next chapter extremely slow and carefully to understand this next project and even know where to start.

When artists paint a picture, it’s not just a picture. There is meaning behind everything an artist does. Either they are inspired by something, or they are trying to get a point across. The importance of understanding origin myths is so we can understand why an artist painted how he did, or what he did. By understanding a piece of art work, you feel more in touch with the picture. If we were to paint a picture, we would first have to be inspired by something. After we had finished the work, we would want people to understand what we did so they can feel the same way we do. If we understand old myths, we are more likely to understand older painting. People used to paint a lot about old myths, and if we didnt understand them, to us it would jus be a picture and we would miss the big picture. That is why we have people involved in iconology. By studying myths, we are able to interoperate the art work. I believe it is polite to the artist if we understand his story.

Painting a picture of yourself is a lot harder than i would have thought. Especially when we have to use pointillism. It is difficult to make it look like yourself. I tried to put details in the eyes and the face to help, but I am unsure how successful I was. I did not have very much difficulty making my colors, but I am yet to add the eyes, mouth, and nose to my face. I am concerned my project won’t turn out as well as I am hoping. I am satisfied with what I have done so far, but I have only done the outline. My other concern is that people will not be able to tell it is me unless I tell them. I am trying my best on this project and putting a lot of time and effort into it because I want to approve my skills. I tried to help identify myself by having my person wear a running cami, it is pink like the one I have and I believe most of the class knows that I was an active person in high school. This weekend I am going to finish my project and I am really hoping it turns out well.

There’s abstract texture, invented, subversive and more. Although the definitions may make them sound complicated and very different from one another, they aren’t. All texture evokes emotion. Personally, I cannot always tell the difference between abstract texture and actual texture. They can do tricky things with your eyes. Like when we were going over things in class, I could not always tell which were abstract and which were not. If an artist is really talented, which they all are, they are able to make an abstract texture look real. For me, texture can put me in a state of awe. All the little things artists add to make a picture look realistic or stick out is simply amazing. They can take any picture and make it look real just by simply layering. I enjoy when the artist makes the painting or artwork look real. It shows you how much talent some people really have. Texture looks like it may be semi-complicated, but yet it looks easy. Like our next project I’m sure won’t be too terribly hard, or at least I’m hoping.

Color effects us in one way or another. We use it in our art, decorating a house, and even getting dressed in the morning. Color personally effects me the most by the way I dress. Every morning, I pick a shirt and then need to decide on dark or light jeans. Even the shoes we wear must match. The socks we wear, the color of our skin all effect the way we dress. When I am driving home from Duluth, I look around at the signs. Signs I am most likely to look at are ones that look impressive. I would not take the time to look at a sign that was green with orange or some other unusual combination. Color is even the reason fall is my favorite season. I love the reds, oranges, and yellows. If I happen to enter the business industry and start my own business, I will need to decorate the building with colors that compliment each other. When I become with a teacher, I will need to think about complimentary colors so the children enjoy being in the room. Color effects everyone everyday, and will continue to until we are no longer on Earth.

Project 2, this shall be interesting. Just drawing my favorite song wouldn’t be too hard but making it abstract is a different story. I always thought abstract would be easier because it’s not as detailed, but boy was I wrong. I know what I want to draw, but I dont know how to draw it. I think I will use what we just learned to chapters 3 and 4 to help. Abstract seems to be mostly shapes with different values and colors. I think I will try to turn my objects into squares and circles of colors that represent the real thing. I will attempt to show emotion through the colors I use and honestly I’m not too sure what else. I will use calmer light colors to represent a summer day by the lake or perhaps I will use bright colors. The song is a country one so the lines will be smooth and not so sharp like I would have used if I had done a rap or rock song. I will try and use some repetition because the part of the song I am using repeats throughout the song. This project will be a challenge, but I think it will help me learn more about art and become a better artist.

Surprisingly, I actually enjoyed our tour at the museum. I really am not a big fan of art but they had such a wide variety it was hard not to find something to like. I enjoyed especially the African beads and the Ojibwa selection. It was nice seeing art from around the world. I was surprised at home much abstract there was. It made me more confident in my art. I don’t necessarily need to be a great artist, it just has to be the way I see things. It was also inspiring, I enjoyed all of the art and the stories behind it. Almost every artist was inspired by someone else. Van Gogh, Picasso, you name it. As I was looking through the different art pieces, I could see the difference in line and shading that we had been talking about. I saw pieces of work that used lines like in The Starry Night or the same color schemes that different artists had used. I noticed the way the shade and use different techniques. I believe the tour was very helpful for me. I also enjoyed our tour guide. He was very polite and knew his topic well. He enjoyed what he was doing and that is important to me. He was also very friendly, which always helps. In conclusion, I enjoyed the tour and may actually going back someday.

Loving the stars, I thought Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” would be perfect for my project. Not being very artistic, I thought it would be more simple because of the way he draws lines. The hashed lines makes it easier for me since I don’t have a very steady hand. The dashed lines will help me make sure that I do not just color. Also I loved the colors he used. I like the blues, greens, yellows, and black. It gives off calming vibe. Being a lover of the sea and stars, I decided to change Van Gogh’s village into the ocean. I am attempting to add fish and some seaweed. Also I am trying to add a boat of some sort. I think using thin strokes for lines will help me with my ocean. I am hoping that I will be able to blend the colors decently. I believe Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” has inspired me more than the other three paintings. “The Three Musicians” would seem not so hard, but I am not very good at abstract art, and the harsh, solid lines. There was use of boxes, which I feel I would have had troubles with. “The Persistence of Time” would have been very difficult for me. There was no hash lines or bold lines. They were thin and solid. They also faded, which I struggle with. The last painting, “The Scream” was my second choice. I like the colors and the mixture of colors, but I like the calming sense of “The Starry Night” a bit more. This is why I choose “The Starry Night” as my painting.
